Mysterious hotel 4 abandoned facade on the Alps

Built in 1882, the Belvedere Hotel (Switzerland) was once an iconic building on the Alps. Many people say that the road to the hotel is the most frightening way.

Located at an altitude of 2,429 m on the Furka Pass (Switzerland), Belvedere hotel is located in one of the most beautiful bends in the Alps. This is the only place in the world where visitors can drive cars close to the edge of the glacier as well as enjoy this landscape so close from the balcony. Photo: Shutterstock.

In the early 20th century, the number of visitors to the Rhone glacier and the hotel increased dramatically thanks to the opening of two new railway lines. In addition, the development of private cars after World War II led to the hobby of visiting the pass of many people.

The explosion in tourist numbers led the hotel owner to decide to expand Belvedere. That is also the reason why it looks like the present with 90 beds ready to serve. Photo: Drones_addiction, Philippmerki

In prosperous times, this place is a destination for travelers interested in exploring. Sometimes they stay at the hotel for weeks during the summer. Belvedere has appeared in the Goldfinger episode of the James Bond series released in 1964 and regularly welcomes Pope John XXIII to stay. Photo: Shutterstock.

However, since the 1960s, the number of tourists coming here has started to decrease. Part of the reason is that the engine of the car is becoming stronger, making the time to enjoy the road shortened, from 2-3 days to a day. The guests who used to come here for the night now just stopped for lunch. Photo: Gletscher.

Besides, the disappearance of glaciers makes the attraction here is not the same. If before, this river flowed down near the valley basin, now, the end of the Rhone is near the hotel. Photo: Gletscher.

In 2015, the hotel was closed. Currently, visitors still come here to visit the ice cellar as well as check-in with the once glorious construction. Photo: Petitemagda, Alenka.skara.
